DRIFTING
Drifting first began in
the mountain roads of Japan in the 1980’s as an underground
recreational activity. It is now considered one of the most popular
form of motor sport, entertainment in Japan today.
Toyo Tires has been a
major driving force behind drifting in Australia and has assisted in
lifting drifting to its current profile. Toyo Tires has been the
naming rights sponsor to the CAMS sanctioned national series the
“Toyo Tires Drift Australia Series” now since 2006, they are
recognised as the tyre of choice for the elite competitors.
Drifting differs from
traditional motor sport and is not based solely on who is the
fastest or who get across the line first. Drifting is a judged
motor sport, similar to that of surfing, snowboarding, freestyle BMX
or motocross.
A competition consists
of two cars involved in a tandem battle, sliding their vehicles,
side by side through a short course. They are awarded points for
criteria such as speed, angle, line through a corner, ability to
emulate the other driver and proximity between cars.
As with any other
motor sport discipline, the quality of the tyre has a profound
effect on the outcome of the contest.
